RAF Pre-war flying boats recovered from lake circa 1950/60s

I was watching a few online video clips from either Movietone or British Pathe, where I discovered footage of a wreck RAF seaplane being recovered from a lake in the UK. I can’t remember many details and I’m unable to search again online because my internet is all but max’d out until Friday, but there were two wooden RAF flying boats recovered. Filmed in black and white – possibly the 1950/60s.

Can anyone shed light on this issue?

UPDATE : can’t find the footage again…

There is quite a lot of info about the flying boat hulls at Greatbottom Flash and Bawdsey Ferry in this thread

Yep, works now, thank you Viscount. Reminds me of the wooden flying boat nose I used to pass on the way to school in Fareham, being used as a garden shed! It was rescued some time later but can’t remember where it ended up, maybe Solent Sky?

I have some b&w photos dating back to the early ’60s of flying boat fuselages at two locations.  These are in a collection kept by the late Don Stephens, who will have acquired these shots while the editor of the first two editions of ‘Wrecks & Relics’ in June 1961 and August 1963 (Ken Ellis’s first was edition 4 in 1974).  They may be of interest, the captions are as noted on the reverse of the prints.  Who supplied the prints has not been noted.

These three captioned: Bawdsey Ferry, 19th August 1961, and that the third shot is a different hull to the pair of photos above.

This one captioned: Southampton at Bawdsey Ferry, August 1962.

Added later on ‘edit’:

I checked my post 30 minutes after posting, and the small, expandable ‘thumb nails for forums’ were there and enlarged on a mouse click-over when instructed to.  Totally gone 12 hours later and replaced by a black block stating ‘image not found or removed’.  Have used ‘edit’ to insert, new re-generated image code, selecting ‘hotlink for forums’ this time (image opens up immediately on requesting the thread) and I’ll check in the morning!  “Fargo Boyle”, I hope the extra wait was worth it!

Entering images on this forum is a pain, as there is an extra step compared to all other forum I participate on.  Posted some 50 images via the same host on to another forum today without any issue.

Hi Adrian. Yeah, they have the remains of a Felixstowe F2A at East Kirkby. I’ll dig out and post some pics soon!

I’m pretty sure that East Kirkby has some fragmentary remains of a Felixstowe-type (ie big and wooden, sorry, there’s so much there that I can’t remember details!) flying boat?

There’s some good stuff available on the flyingboats of the Great Bottom Flash. Still researching them, would delighted to hear if anyone has any further updates.
