RR Merlin Oil Dilution Question

Hi everyone,

I am a member of the group currently working on the restoration of DH98 Mosquito HR339 (NZ2328-82), at Ferrymead Aeronautical Society in Christchurch NZ, for eventual static display. While I have been a long time lurker here, the reason for my posting is to try to obtain an answer to the following question: The RR Merlin 25’s fitted to the Mosquito were originally equipped with oil dilution valves which, as I understand it (and please correct me if I’m wrong) injected a small amount of fuel into the oil to thin it out so that correct operating oil pressures were achieved in a shorter time than otherwise, particularly in colder weather. One of our contacts in the NZ Mosquito community has informed us that this system was removed in RAF service, possibly after a mishap to a Merlin equipped Halifax.
Are there any Merlin or Halifax experts who can corroborate this?
The oil dilution valves don’t appear to be present on either of our Merlins, but these came to us from a garage in Dunedin, where they had apparently been intended for installation in a Hydroplane. They are consequently missing a number of ancillary systems including but not limited to the generator/alternator (one port, the other starboard I understand), and auxiliary hydraulic pump.
