F-117

I was always of the belief the F-117 was black becuase that was the colour of the RAM the aircraft’s skin was covered with. I recently heard on TV though that the reason the aircraft was black was because it was designed to be used as a night fighter only.
Can this really be true? I thought people had realised during WW2 that painting an aircraft black, even if it to be used at night, doesn’t actually aid night camoflage.
