PTR-175 Help?

Hello all,

I’m the Head of Signals for my CCF (Combined Cadet Force) Contingent. Digging around in the attic the other day, I happened to chance upon this beast, some cables and a control box.

Using my cadet initiative :D, I wired the lot together, and identified the + and – pins on the Interconnecting box power supply. To this, I wired a 24V supply (I assume the supply is supposed to be 28?) and turned on the switch on the control panel.

A fan began to whir in the mechanism, but there didn’t appear to be any hiss in the headset (Larkspur wired into the connecting box).

I concluded my experimentation there, as I didn’t quite feel brave enough to open it up.

My ultimate aim would be to have it operational on transmit and receive (the Cadets have some UHF frequencies allocated to us by the MOD). We have a tall chimney and some Co-ax, with which to mount an antenna.

To this end, does anyone have any pin-outs / APs / Advice? I was directed to here by a Malcolm Lambert, who installed one in a Canberra, and who said the right people would be here 🙂

The next step I suppose is to depressurise and open up the big black box, and have a look at the capacitors to see if It works.

One main thing I don’t quite grasp is the number of pins on the Power supply socket; There is a + and -, but there’s at least 6 pins. 4 Grounds? or supply to other units? Beats me…

Anyways, Thank you very much for your patience, and I can only wait in hope!

Yours,

Cadet Sergeant Joseph Greenwood
IC Signals Reading School CCF

Pumas also had them, left one behind a bar once in the Hotel on detachment as it was the safest place to put it.

Thanks for the quick replies 🙂

How does one go about telling which type is which?

The legend going around is that it’s an Ex-Victor set, but that may be all wrong. Would the 115V be wired in separately? We have a Clansman 28V 10A DC Supply, would that work? (I’m in the process of finding cables to make it work)

P.S. Also, I’ll be sure to post any findings on here – in fact, It may turn into a bit of a Project log…

PTR175 Help

If memory serves me right, there were two different power supply units used in the PTR 175.
‘ Ground Use Only’ radios, as used in Air Traffic Control, had a 28V power supply unit. Those used in aircraft used both 28V DC and 115V 200Hz AC.
If you can get your hands on a 28V PSU, it is directly interchangable with the
DC/AC PSU.

There was a display at Cockpifest with a working PTR.175 radio. It had a perspex cover to show all the gears and whirry things inside. Fantastic!

Not sure who’s display it was though? Was it part of Scott Bouchard’s anyone?

I’d be very interested to learn more myself for my Hunter project.
