On 26 May 1916 the first aeroplane to land in Galashiels did so in two different fields on the edge of the town. The local paper, the Border Telegraph recorded five days later:
“A UNIQUE VISITOR
An aeroplane which flew over the district on Friday descended in a field on the outskirts of the town. It rose and descended again in another field, where it remained overnight. This being the first flying machine to descend in the district it naturally attracted a great amount of attention.”
Unfortunately, there is no photograph or mention of the type. Whilst a bit of a long shot, does anyone have any knowledge of what type this would have been, or any other information about this particular incident?
