You are probably best sending a private message to hillwalker, I certainly don’t know anyone who has looked for or found the crash site.

It’s a long shot, but I wondered if hillwalker ever found the crash site. I’m currently making a documentary for the pilot’s family with commentary by his sister who is now 84 y.o. and last saw Terry Cooper when he left New Zealand to join the FAA in 1940 when she was 10. I found out quite a bit from the NZ Military Archives in Trentham, Wellington – but would be very keen to know more about the exact site. I have found a photo on the internet looking across the water to Craignish Point, but it’s a very wide shot. You may be interested to know that Cooper was the first member of the Royal New Zealand Navy to die while on active service. The RNZN was actually formed on 1 Oct 1941, the day of the accident. Prior to that it was a branch of the Royal Navy. I’m not sure if many Brits today realise how close New Zealand’s ties were to them – our Prime Minister at the time said “where Britain goes, we go”. I’d also be interested to know if it was a sea fog he encountered or low cloud and if these are the prevailing conditions in the area in October – which I guess is Autumn in Scotland.

FAA Aircraft 1939-45 says it was from Machrihanish en route to Fort William for an exercise and flew into a hill in low visibility at Airdo Farm, one mile NE of Cragnish Point. S/L JW JWT Cooper RNZN and LA J Stewart both killed.
