I’m going from memory here but I think the last unit to operation the Hamilcar was “B” Squadron of the GPR at RAF Fairford who stopped flying them in 1949. The Hamilcars where then put into storage and basically rotted to pieces. One was pulled out of storage from RAF Rissington and used in a demonstration on 9th October 1950 which is believed to be the last ever flight.

As for where the photo is taken – I *think* a lot of gliders ended up being scrapped at Hawarden and I think that had L Hangers?

One thing of interest is that the gliders in the picture haven’t had their roundels updated to the D type which happened in 1947. I think all gliders with operation units after 1947 got the update during their major service schedule. Maybe they’d been in storage for a while already.
