Spitfire oil temp gauge

One for the Spitfire experts, is this type of temp gauge very common? According to a well known aviation parts website they do seem to be quite rare.

Thanks

This thread has gone a little off track.

If you have differences, please do not air them in public, as I have said before.

We have a PM system for such things, so lets keep it civil can we?

Thanx for the advert Graham! The oil temp gauge is being sold to raise money for a museum not me. The other stuff is from my collection…I did not think a pre-requesite to sell on Ebay was being a dealer.

Dunno why you have a problem with me old chap? Feel free to email or PM me and tell me why…

You are by no stretch of the imagination a dealer Tony – any suggestion otherwise is ill informed to say the least.

Welcome David!

I just picked up the attachment…it is absolutely identical to the classic oil temp gauge but has a black bezel and no legend for the ‘liquid’ just the 0-100deg scale. It has the added benefit of no Ra!!!!! I think it is pre-war something like a Hart or Fury….any ideas? It has a lovely long sender unit and ‘cable’

Thanks Tony. Just spotted that as well. I’ll watch that one and see how it goes. It would at least be an easy swap if a later gauge becomes available at a later date.

Cheers,
Dave

Oil Temp Gauge

Hello Gents.

I’ve just joined this forum and been given permission to post!

Some of you know me (Bruce and Graham), as I’m rebuilding the Merlin XX engine, as shown on Grahams website. Another update coming your way soon Graham!

I am actually looking for one of these oil temp gauges to complete my control panel. If any of you would like to sell a usable gauge I would be very interested to discuss it. Ideally a fighter version with the short capilliary would be good, for obvious reasons, but I can probably hide a longer capilliary if necessary.

Cheers,
Dave Lee

Thats the problem with the forum sometimes you dont know who the person behind the user name is, when i offered to send you a mag switch i thought you were just a poor formulite with a project. When I realised who you were a dealer after a freebie, someone I have bought quite a bit from myself I thought you would be more than capable of getting one yourself.
By the way I still have the genuine mosquito door you sold me  you know the one with Mosquito stencilled across the glass.

A. I am NOT a dealer. I have released items to you cheaply which tend to end up on your site.
B. I was happy to BUY from someone including you…not after a freebie
C. The ‘Mosquito’ door came to me with mosquito stencilled on it, you were party to the debate on this very forum and I repeated that to you when you bought it cheaply from me at Popham. I do not lie.
D. You have asked for late Spitfire spade grips on this site so why cannot I ask for a mag switch.
E. You knew who I was, I would rather you didnt offer in the first place.

I do not wish to fall out with anyone, but do not call me a dealer Graham. I have a day job and have to sell surplus items in order to run my projects which are displayed for free.

In the words of the BoB film…its unforgiveable, I lost my temper!

Round Oil temp gauges common are they ? I dont think so Old chap. There are quite a few Rad temp gauges about but oil temp are RHS. I havent managed to figure out why but there is no question Oil temps out number rad temps 10 to 1.
I would be happy to buy if you point in the direction of all these common oil temp gauges instruments.

I get offered them frequently old chap, but I don’t touch them unless I can pass them on to someone who wants them. Incidentally, never did get that set of magneto switches you said you’d send me! Does not matter now as I bought some.

Thanks chaps, its surplus to my requirements and am willing to part with it if anyone needs one. It’s fully serviceable and I would be keen to trade it for any Lancaster bits.

Good ones with the capillary, that can be pressed back into service are getting very scarce.

Are you a buyer or a seller?
