For many years Southend Airport has held an open day in conjunction with the airshow to allow aviation enthusiasts to get closer to the aircraft operating for the show.
This year though, due to the major infrastructure building work taking place at the airport, the decision has been made not to carry on this tradition.
All is not lost. They have allowed us at the Vulcan Restoration Trust to open an area adjacent to the eastern taxiway, next to our Avro Vulcan B2 XL426, and not too far from the runway threshold, to allow enthusiasts and photographers to view the many movements for the 2010 event.
We are expecting far more display aircraft to operate from Southend Airport this year than those previously, and are also hoping to have the Plane Sailing Catalina ‘moored’ near to the Vulcan, both of which will be opened up for inspection for a small fee.
Parking for the viewing area will be in a car park near to the current terminal and control tower area, with access to the viewing area by walking only – due to the access roads to that area being a building site!
All gate entry fees will help towards the continued preservation of Vulcan XL426.
