Latest Details Of Nimrod at Coventry

Posted on behalf of Classic Flight:

Nimrod XV232 – Expected at Coventry late morning on Tuesday May 11

The most accurate information we currently have to hand indicates that the Classic Flight’s Nimrod will be arriving at AIRBASE, Coventry late morning on Tuesday May 11.

Exact details are still to be confirmed by the MoD but to the best of our knowledge the aircraft is on schedule for delivery. However, the risk of volcanic ash closing Scottish airspace remains a possibility and the delivery can, obviously, not be guaranteed.

Members of the public wanting to see XV232 make her final landing are welcome to visit AIRBASE. Other aircraft from the Classic Flight will be on display and it is hoped that several will fly during the day. It is also our hope that the DC-6 may conduct engine runs (or even taxi).

The AIRBASE visitor centre remains ‘work-in-progress’ with an anticipated opening date of May 29. Therefore access to the AIRBASE hangar will be limited.

Admission on May 11 will be £5 per person but visitors will be issued with a voucher entitling them to a £3 discount on admission to AIRBASE during the opening weekend (May 29-31). Members of the Classic Flight Club will be admitted free of charge.

Further information will be published on http://www.classicflight.com and http://www.classicflightclub.com as and when we receive it.

I have to admit the ‘rod is a pleasantly noisy beastie. Especially when you’re pretty close to the runway as it winds up to full pelt for a fast taxy! But not as pleasantly noisy as a Victor… 😉

Shush you!

Our little crew are all working really hard on 963. She’ll be ready in her own time; then we’ll see whether she can match the Nimrod for noise making.

Ben, when I was there last Thursday (21st Oct) RAF engineers were due along with a ‘driver’.

Someone must have turned up as it did run later that day (after I had gone 🙁 ) despite the discovery of the no. 3 engine FOD guard being the incorrect type. The flaps were operated during the run.

I am told that the engines were started twice on the Sunday. Apparently, to those not used to them, they are bl**dy noisy.

Janie, what’s the reg of your Chippie please?

Roger Smith.

G-BBND, displaying WD286. She is easily distinguishable from other Chipmunks inasmuch as she is the only one with a yellow spinner.

LOL – Keith, mind if I post that pic onto Classic Flight’s GST (volunteer’s) Forum? It would create more mirth I reckon :diablo:

You are a gimp! How amusing! 😉 I did notice an ‘unsociable git’ at MAM contorting himself around the place.

Hi Janie, I didn’t recognise you (but did wonder!), I must apologise, but I was the gimp taking all sorts of funny angles at Coventry and at the Midland Air Museum where I think you went afterwards? I was trying to cram alot into not very much time, so may have come across as an unsociable git!

You’re welcome Janie, really nice looking chippie. Happy memories of them from my days as a Cadet 🙂

Only shot I got from my perch on the Shack, not great sorry:(
