'warplanes to alaska'

Hi
Just browsing ..
warplanes to alaska, by blake Smith,
It’s amazing the number of a/c lost on the route, and wondered if anyone knew how many had been recovered ?

i.e. lost a/c
b-26, b-24, p-36, p-38, p-39, a-20,p-47, etc.
It interestingly mentions a scrappit of a/c parts at whitehorse.

well worth a read.
cheers
Jerry

With the recent (3-4 weeks ago) find of a Curtiss Helldiver in an Oregon forest not far from its base, you have to wonder about the planes that haven’t been found yet.

There are huge tracts of wilderness in North America, I’m sure we’d be surprised what’s out there.

On the WIX board there is a posting about the discovery of a B-47 that crashed in remote Wisconsin in the early 60s.

I have earlier shown this picture (and more) of an A-20 lost on its way to Alaska. Lies @ 10 km. south of BW-1 (NSSQ) on South Greenland.

I got a photocopy of the official U.S. crash report:

And, by sheer coincidence, Life Magazine had a story about the squadron only a month before- Check the serial on the tail:

Talk about a sister plane!

What I don´t know is – why was it brought back to the US? Was the A-20 obsolete by the time, and the plane brought home for melting down – or wuold it have been just for a thorough service?

The A-20, I understand, was not equipped with self-sealing tanks, like the newer Marauder, so were they being ditched?

hi,
the ones i know about 3 b-26’s for milion dollar valey, at least on more b-26 from a lake recently a p-38, and the remains of a p-39 where recoved, there are rumours of a substantally complete p-38 near whitehorse or watson lake but it believed the locals who might know of its location (assuming it exists) want to save it from being recovered and removed, it would be nice to get some details of rought areas where each individual aircraft crashed but i have know idea where to start on something like that,
hope what little info i know is of some interest
regards Sam
