Fighter Factory FW-190 Comes Alive!

Virginia based Fighter Factory/Military Aviation Museum’s FW-190 (modern f/s flyable replica) had its first engine run last Friday! Check out the Meier Motors website for video and photos at http://www.meiermotors.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=89%3Afw190a8yagen&catid=25%3Aaircraft-&lang=de&Itemid=18

Somebody seems to have got soot and oil on my nice new paint job 😮

There was a topic very recently about the various flyable ‘190s.

I see that the last post relating to the identities and whereabouts on the New Build FW 190s was back in 2010. Does anybody have an update on flyers, civil registrations and whereabouts that they would be willing to share?

I’ve heard of these, but I have no idea what the hell it is! 😮

Any chance of enlightening me/us?

@DazDaMan: I found these pics of a Kommandogerät at BMW´s website.

Michael

http://www.bmw.de/de/de/insights/history/eheritage/introduction.html

skip intro, click left on “Suche nach Jahr” (search by year) and enter 1940, top link will show Kommandogerät, lower link BMW 801.

Those links below are from a forum related to the 7 series bmw, not bmw itself. Unfortunately there´s no English version / translation available. But you can imagine how complicated the device is. Maybe someone is able to translate, I lack the proper English vocabulary.

And here a photo of a genuine Focke-Wulf 190, just recovered off the sea at Herdla in Norway.

What what I’ve seen on the web its a mechanical-electrical computer operated by the throttle that automatically adjusts fuel flow, mixture strength, propeller pitch setting and ignition timing.

Scroll down for a picture:

Looks like a rather complicated beastie!

I believe not – it uses conventional controls. I did examine a Kommandogerat unit recently and its frighteningly complex – akin to a very large Swiss watch!! 😮

Is this aircraft the former Duxford based machine?

No – see comment below.

What unit aircraft are the markings depicting Steve?

Its the aircraft of Georg Schott, Staffelkapitan of 1/JG1 based at Deelen, Holland. He was killed in combat in September 1943.

In the background of the fourth image of your link, can be seen another FW190. Which one is this and who owns it? What’s the schedule for this aircraft and what markings will it feature?

This is the former Tom Blair aircraft that was based at Dx. Its been paint stripped and will eventually be going in to a silver, semi-military scheme (not being dealt with by WCS). Its owned by a private individual, Europe mainland based.

Have they found a digital version of the Kommandogerat analogue brainbox to use in the airframes ?

Tom Blair’s ‘Black 12’ in the states (again needs confirming)

I remember seeing this dismantled in the hangar at Kissimmee in Dec 2007.

Must admit to being fascinated by the entire concept of the Flug Werk 190’s. Have they found a digital version of the Kommandogerat analogue brainbox to use in the airframes ? I remember a conversation I had with Len Thorne years ago when he described flying captured FW190 A8 PE882 on approach to Wittering when the Kommandogerat went haywire. It was the most frightening experience he ever had during his flying career and insisted the aeroplane be grounded after landing safely.

Blue Skies, Len

CIRCUS 6, from my previous post:

990002: Jerry Yagen / The Fighter Factory / Military Aviation Museum, Bremgarten, Germany • Under final assembly to fly with MeierMotors GbR. Last known civil registration: D-FWKC. To be based at Suffolk, VA, USA.
990009 (980554): private owner (ex-Tom Blair / Spitfire Ltd, Duxford, UK), Bremgarten, Germany • Under assembly to fly with MeierMotors GbR. Last known registration: G-FWAB.

Absolutely stunning work on the aircraft, and the paint scheme – well done to all!
Not sure about those black & white nose checks though…;)

Thanks for all the nice comments chaps – it will be easily the best example of the FW-190 repro, complete with many original parts as Bruce pointed out. I will pass these comments on to Jurgen and the team at Meier Motors.

Great list MK959,
i thought these were A-8/N with the AsH-82 engine and D-9/N with the V-12 Allison engine. /N = ‘nachbu’ meaning new/replica, but my German is non-existant !
20 kits of which 16 were for customers, as well as Europe & USA also Brasil, South Africa & Australia (but these need confirming)
Of the two supplied to German museums, these were new build fuselage mated with original parts to ‘static display’
170393 Luftfahrtmuseum,Laatzen,Hannover (ties in with 990000)
210968 Luftwaffenmuseum,Leversen AB (is this 990007 at Berlin ??)
There are four D-9/N’s the German example, Eric Vormezeele rebuild of 210102 with original Jumo engine, Tom Blair’s ‘Black 12’ in the states (again needs confirming), the fourth unknown
So hope this helps, again any thoughts welcome
