On 4th September 1956 Lt Robert ‘Bobby’ Sanderson of 831 Sqdn crashed whilst flying Wyvern S.4 WN327 near Sutton, West Sussex, apparently losing control at low level. And whilst he did manage to eject he did so too low and at an angle that precluded him surviving and was killed.
Following the loss of his son Robert, Colonel Sandison and his family had commissioned a trophy in the form of a solid silver Wyvern mounted on top of a black base.This was to be awarded annually to the pilot with the most outstanding officer-like qualities and proficiency as a strike pilot. A very fitting tribute to a much missed son and pilot.
Does anyone know the fate of this trophy.. for instance does the FAAM have it in its collection, or if it is still being presented to officers in the FAA to this day.?
