A Question for Mosquito Experts, ie Bruce!

Attached is a drawing of a Morris QDP Port-side oil cooler, Ref 27B/2348, there is also a handed Stb`d type QDO, 27B/2349.
They are 50″ long by 12″ tall and 3 1/2″ deep.
I am told that these are Mosquito, but the only types I have seen are side by side block radiators with a block oil cooler mounted alongside. The question is, did they ever use a thin oil cooler like this mounted behind a full width radiator, as was the practice with later Lancaster power plants? I am assuming it would be fitted to Mosquitos with the 100 series engine and maybe the Hornet?
Failing that I would be interested to know what they were fitted to.

Cheers

As mentioned ,oil coolers the same as the one in the diagram were used on Fireflies, but yours is not from a Firefly (the inlet & outlet ports are slightly different)

So out of the three types (that i can think of ) this ruled out the Firefly.
So either Mosquito or Hornet?

Sorry, what I was trying to determine was whether this particular type is for a Mosquito. The fact that it is 50″ long tended to rule out certain other types.

I asume that the advantage is to get a full width radiator, which works better than a deeper one. Later Lancs using this system did have an engine of approx 300 bhp more than the Merlin XX, or it may have been for tropical use? This kind of info doesn`t come up in the technical manuals very much.

I’ve got some good images showing the Hornet installation, and will post them here.

Thanks David. I am assuming that the Hornet followed the ideas of the later Mk Mosquito?

Yes, the 2 stage Mossies used this arrangement – oil cooler behind the coolant radiator, with a cabin heater alongside closest to the fuselage.
