I was wondering if anybody might be able to tell me if a Ju88 crashed near Newcastle (upon Tyne) on the 15th/16th of February 1941.
I have been able to find a He111 that crashed at South Shields but was wondering if there was anything else I might have missed.
Any help would be great,
Johnnie

It’s not far from the Wear bridge although I’m not 100% on the exact location. Apparantly it’s only a nose structure now that NEAM looked at getting but would just disintergrate on lifting!

The rumour of the He.111 in the Tyne is actually in the Wear. Diving crews used to train on it until the structure became to dangerous!.
Where abouts is that at Phil, i live 2 minutes walk from the Wear
would be interesting to look at where it is even if i cant see it

Four killed, 1 bailed out but fell on trolley bus wires and was electrocuted.
🙁 Poor sod just wasn’t meant to outlive his crew was he?

As for the Shields crash in Beach road.. This claimed the first civilian casualty in South Shields of WW2 whom happened to be a fireman (Mr Purvis, a relative of mine) recovering one of the bombs out of the marine park lake when it detonated. I’m lucky enough to have a part of this aircraft in my collection as my grandfather, only a teenager at the time was one of the first on the scene scavenged a few parts although most confiscated of him at the crash site by the local constabulary! Regards, Phil.

There used to be a couple of Luftwaffe aircrew graves in Heaton Cemetery which I last saw about 1953. Any connection I wonder???

Only loss over the North East on 15/16th Feb 1941 was the He.111 which you refer to (w/nr. 3085 of 6/KG4) which came down at South Shields. Anti-Aircraft fire struck the aircraft and it was losing height when its port wing collided with the cable of a barrage balloon. It crashed at the Eastern end of Beach Road at Bent’s Park.
Cheers

The guys you need to speak to are ACIA – www.acia.co.uk
all I’ve heard of was the famous He111 in Sunderland centre, a probable Ju88 off the coast at Whitley BAy (possible wreckage visible near St Mary’s Lighthouse a couple of summers ago – wish I’d got the waders on!
ACIA will have records of whatever you’re looking for.
