WWII runways

Over on Britmodeller, we’ve had an enquiry about runway markings, in WWII. My belief is that there would have been none, even on concrete/tarmac, since it would compromise any attempt to camouflage the airfields, but does anyone know, for sure, please?

North Weald’s main runway had a meandering river painted on it in the early war period.

Certainly in the early war years hard runways did not have markings, and were camoflaged as this 1942 shot shows:

Are there many colour pictures of camoflaged runways as I always find B&W photos tend to lose the effect?

The chaps over at AIX (http://www.airfieldinformationexchange.org/community/) would know for sure. I believe there was a discussion not so long ago on this very topic.
