Vickers Viking Query

I was wondering if anyone could identify a Vickers Viking for me? I was looking at a head on photo (taken possibly in 1950s) of one in Rhodesia so the airline could not really be made out but from the angle I could make out the registration KN at the end, possibly JKN. However it can’t be G-AJKN (this is a Miles Gemini) so does anyone have any ideas? I have looked on the internet to see if there is a list of regs of all Vikings produced but could not find a complete one.

My first cycle trip to Southend was a week or so after Viscount G-AVJZ had crashed. At that time G-AIKN was clealy visible from the spectator terrace dumped near the compass circle at the far end of 33/15. G-APOP was on the far side of the airport either inside or outside the old Tradair hangar and G-APOO may have been there with it along with several Channel Airways Dakotas.
According to my ancient copy of BCAR G-AHPE was scrapped at Gatwick in June 61 so that was probably the one on the fire dump and G-AJBX was withdrawn from use at Manston in May 1965.
BCAR shows G-APOP as withdrawn from use in Jan 1965 but it wasn’t broken up until 5 years later in January 1970. I remember that the Southend museum didn’t consider any of the Channel Airways Dakotas or the Viking as being viable for preservation because they were missing a lot of bits and had the wings off. In those days the resources simply weren’t available to tackle anything which wasn’t already substantially complete. The preservation movement has come a long way since then.

According to an ancient and extremely tatty note book, it appears that I saw G-AIKN at Southend in 1967 or 68. It was one of three Vikings that it appears that I saw that year, the others being G-AHPE and G-AJBX. I think, but am far from sure, that G-AJBX was the Viking at Gatwick used by the fire service. Might I have seen G-AHPE at Southend as well?

IKN must have finally disappeared late 60’s/ early 70’s. She was still sitting at the far end of 33/15 when I first started spotting at Southend in 1967.

WIEESO – they are lovely shots. I have to confess I expected my original query to be done and dusted within 10 Nanoseconds by your good self!
I have just had a number of pictures made up from negatives that my father took in the 1950s and will post one on a new thread in a couple of tics of a KLM CV 240 which I never knew they flew.

Newforest & Gooney Bird – G-AIKN it is! And the answer within 10 minutes of putting it on the forum! Many Thanks to you both. The photo which belongs to a friend of mine was taken in Southern Rhodesia. I will have to see if I can borrow it to scan and put on the forum.

Could be G-AIKN which was finally owned by Continental Airways and stood engineless outside the BKS hangar at Southend for many years. I believe it was eventually scrapped in the mid-sixties!
