March 24th 1944 The Great Escape !

BlueNoser352 :

A tad late posting this from the colonies, but always try to remember this date in history…the escape from Stalag Luft III by some very brave young men from many of your countries. I have always held what this men did in very high regard. Despite being held as POW’s many of them continued to take the war the the Nazi’s as best they could. Fifty of them were of course recaptured and murdered by the Nazi’s. I just got the new Australian DVD documentary on the story called ” The Great Escape: The Reckoning” The story after the war as RAF officer Frank McKenna and his team tracked down many of the German’s responsible for this horrible act. Also finally tracked down a copy of ” THE LONDON CAGE”… about the case and how they solved the real truth about what took place . I offer a salute and a prayer for the memory of these men…may their spirit remain forever in the hearts of all and those love ones they left behind . Their lives ended way to soon ! Have to tip a cap and offer a slaute to men like Frank McKenna for his dogged determination to track down those responsible.

I had the great pleasure of meeting Sqn Ldr B.A. “Jimmy” James MC a few years back at a Squadron reunion, he talked about his time back then for a few minutes, we could have listened for hours. He lost many friends amongst the 50, but their legend lived on through him and the other lucky ones.

Sadly he made his final escape a couple of years back.

Never forgotten.
