Quite amazing after all the interest in this Great raid that so much wreckage can still be picked up at the crash sites.

I still don’t buy it to be dambuster.
ED927 AJ-E came down near Möhnetalsperre
I alway thought AJ-E to have crashed near Rees. Rees is situated near Bocholt. And Bocholt is about 120 kilometers away from the Möhnesee. (And wasn’t it even supposed to bomb the Sorme dam anyway?)
By the way, according to ebay the seller seems to live at 51588 Nümbrecht, about 40km east of Cologne (80km to the Möhnesee, 100km to Haldern – as the crow flies of course). No wonder, why he has to dig at night. 😉
It might be wreckage of a Lanc all right, but there are doubtless still many small remains in German soil. Even at the supoosedly cleard sites.
In my opionion they just claim it to be da dambuster to get more revenue from it.

He has recently sold a piece which he claims to be from:

I don’t know whether that helps anyone establish if his claim is likely to be true?
Also, I suppose in his broken English, he may be describing conditions overnight when he camped in the field, with the land-owner’s full permission.
Tough lads them Jerries and they’re used to digging in frozen ground. They had a lot of practice in Russia. 🙂

Just been up in Liverpool and picked up a brick close to the site of the former Stork Hotel with DB carved into it. I reckon this could also be something to do with the Dam Busters !
How much do you want for it ?

Some of the pieces are quite big and even seem to have paint on them, taken together its quite allot of wreckage, if it is Dambuster its quite a find although i personally would not take a risk on it without stronger prov.

What disturbs me the most about this is why is it being dug at night?
Just two thoughts:
a) Most people have to go to work by day
b) The landlord is asleep

In his first pic – What is the piece just above the Perspex fragment?
I found a similar part at a local Lanc site. Any ideas?

It was probably dug up at night to get the genuine Dambuster atmosphere
Well played!
I also agree that it would be unrealistic to claim that all such wreckage could have been removed.

I’d be surprised if there were not still some parts extant at the crash sites whatever published sources might say.

Giving the seller the benefit of the doubt…
Any other Lancasters lost in that area?
Or to quote captainslow’s post “…any small parts left have long since been recovered..” would that really include parts that small?
By: captainslow - 10th March 2010 at 21:49
According to the book ‘Dambuster Raid Crash Sites’ all the crash sites were cleared of wreckage years ago, and any small parts left have long since been recovered. . .

Ah….the Dambuster Lancaster. You know, Ian. The one in Germany.
It was probably dug up at night to get the genuine Dambuster atmosphere which, of course, is sold with this lot!
Don’t get me wrong….I’m not saying this isn’t Dambuster Lancaster. It probably is. But the detail in the listing and its nocturnal excavation is certainly, well…odd.

Lots of well researched history and no hint of illegal collecting. Nice.
