Hello to you all,
This is my first post on this forum.
I’m building a 1/32 model of MN247, The Hawker Typhoon from 183 Sqn, Typhoon, flown by F/L Peter Edward Raw DFC (RAFVR 119259), he was KIA on 21.3.1944 at 14.00 near Nijmegen whilst attacking barges on the River Maas. (this a/c actually belonged to 198 Sqn)
I have found some older postings on this forum. The info I’m looking for are the squadron-codeletters on his aircraft. Sofar i have not been able to research them out.
The crashsite of Raw’s Typhoon is only one mile away from my home. This makes it an interesting piece of local history.
Hope anuone can help me out.
greetings

183 Squadron’s code letters would of been HF. Not sure on what the third letter could of been.
You could try emailing the RAF directly, they must have details in the 183 Sqd. archives.
Or you could possibly even try getting in contact with the Spitfire musuem at former RAF Manston in Kent, both 183 and 198 Sqd. were based there up until around 43.

Thanks to all of you who responded sofar.
Allthough I still do not know the individual code-letter of Peter Raw’s Typhoon….
Nevertheless I’m thankful and hope something will turn up sooner or later
greeting and keep up the good work…!

Many years ago I bought a suitcase full of Peter Raw’s paperwork (actually, from another regular poster on this forum) but passed this on to a colleague who still has it. Apparently, the suitcase turned up at a boot fair originally. There were also photographs etc, and I know the person who now has it all did a great deal of research and also tried to find other members of the Raw family. As I recall, there were other distinguished pilots in the family and Peter’s father earned a DSC in WW1. I will contact my colleague and point him to this thread.

I had a look in the relevant ORBs, at Kew, today, but with no luck, whatsoever. It looks as though, rather than “belonging to” 198 Squadron, all of their Typhoons could have been taken over by 183, as 198 probably just relinquished them. According to the ORB, two days previously, 198 received word that they were to move to Manston, and they went by train; they didn’t fly. Neither Squadron noted the code letters, though, just the serial nos, which doesn’t help at all. Sorry.
