Bachem Natter photos

A colleague pointed me to this collection of photos, in German but you get the gist.
According to at least one German magazine (Spiegel) article one of these may have broken the sound barrier before Chuck Yeager, or even George Welch, but the pilot was killed immediately after when it crashed. This flight took place on March 1st, 1945. 65 years ago today.

Interesting pics, thanks for sharing.
You’ve got to admit the Luftwaffe had some very couragous pilots in those dark days, were the Natters any good operationally, ie any ‘kills’ etc?

I can think of a few people I’d like to strap into one, then light the blue touch paper and stand well back! 😀

I’m not sure the pilot had an awful lot of choice in the matter!

They never got past test flying, so another of those ‘What if’ questions..

During WWII several pilots on both sides of the conflict broke the sound barrier before Chuck Yeager, and 2 or 3 of them even lived to tell about it. All of them did so in a dive however, not in level flight.

From memory, I think it only flew with a pilot once, and he was killed

I wonder what the Americans evaluation was on this aircraft. Picture 15 shows the M58-Transporter being driven through Silver Hill, USA on 6 April 1945.
