Reverse Thrust Hunter F6

In 1956 F.G. Miles Ltd installed an experimental cascade type thrust reverser in Hunter F6 XF833. Could anyone tell me if the trials were successful, and what happene to the aircraft subsequent to the trials

i Gget the impression tha it was a proof of concept installation. I don’t think Sir Sydney Cqmm would have approved an implicit suggestion that the Hunter was inadequate and braking needed assistence from reverse thrust

As far as i’m aware the trials were relatively successful, i have somewhere a clip of it landing at Farnborough and engaging reverse thrust.. quite impressive. But i think it was deemed unnecessary and not taken any further. What happened to it after i don’t know.

F.6 prototype, no RAF service, various MoS/MoA trials, scrapped Farnborough 1963.

It was still extant among the dismantled Hunter F.5 airframes lined up near the fatigue testing tanks at Farnborough in 1965; it stood out due to its duck egg green colour scheme.

I have a feeling, but stand to be corrected, that those Hunters were destroyed in ballistics testing at places like Foulness.

I remember seeing it at Farnborough during one display year (I was young then) and I clearly remember the pale green finish. Might even have a pic (B/W) somewhere in my attic.

I unearthed the attached pictures in the Visitor Centre at Shoreham Airport while researching data on the operations of F.G. Miles Ltd.

If my memory serves from i book i read many moons ago, it was originally designed on the principle of developing a STOL variant, designed to work on hastily assembled and short runways in the event that the ruskies got the ass.
This was around the time Hawker-Sid’ was developing the Kestrel Harrier prototype, and eventually this project was abandoned in favour of the more effective Harrier.

It was 1956 – what I remember most was the noise it made when it turned on the reverse thrust! It ( and the other noisy aircraft that year) hooked me for life!

[QUOTE=pagen01;1 have you done any research etc on Miles Ellectronics at Shoreham?[/QUOTE]

Yes I was an apprentice at FG Miles Ltd and worked for FG Miles Engineering from Feb 1966 till Singer bought Miles Electronics in September 1969, when I was transferred to Link-Miles

I am researching for a pamphlet on the products of the Miles Group of Companies, which includes a section on the devices built by MILES Electronics
If you have any specific queries mail me and I will endeavour to answer them
