Parkhouse Aviation Visit.

Paid a visit to Barry’s yard today to collect a couple of wheels (thanks to HMS Vulture). Here’s a few pics posted with Barry’s kind permission.

Hi Rob, I bet those Wyvern wheels didn’t stay behind!
Did you get to see the Gannet cockpit or is that at the other site?

P.S that last canopy looks a lot like the one that we were discussing at FAAM!

James, yes the wheels made the journey home with me. As for the canopy.. its hard to tell from the angle and its half buried position but you could be right.

The Gannet cockpit was the reason why i took along my camera but sadly i did’nt get to see it.

I’m sure it’s the same type. looks FAA in colour etc, but then its rear hinged and not sliding – as is the FAAM store example.
The flared sides should help id it, very Supermarine like, but they were all sliding type on their jets.
I was looking at pics of the FAAM one the other day and it looks Canberra PR.9 ish, even down to the internal release handles.

Well done with the wheels, always the same with rare finds though, finding duplicate parts rather than new bits!

Parkhouse Aviation.

It’s always a good place to visit and have a good ferret around. You never come away empty-handed. Barry is a very amenable sort of chap and usually has the kettle on.

Those wheels look like Meteor mains to me. It was proposed on this forum a while back that they were Wyvern pattern but I’d put money on those particular ones being Meteor. Perhaps they used exactly the same wheel and tyre?

Meteor wheel type is: AH 8725

Tyre size is: 30 x 9.00-15 or 32 x 10.00-15

The wheels that Rob picked up are definately Wyvern, I can’t say I’ve ever seen Meteor wheels that have that pattern to them.

Wheels

We are referring to the same wheels aren’t we – the ones with the eight circular recesses in the face?

Meteor wheels

Here’s a pic of the same pattern wheel on the Meteor Flight’s T.7, WA591.

This is the standard type fitted to, at least, all T.7’s and Mk.8 Meteor aircraft.

Yes sorry Anon, I was looking at stockpiles of the other type of Meteor wheel the other day, with the axial brake vents around the hub, I feel doubly embarressed now as I was actually looking around WA591 weekend before last!
Is the Wyvern wheel not taller and narrower then?

Hi Anon,
Yes i am already aware Wyvern and Meteor mains are very similar, if not identical. I have two sets, both with different AH no’s and both the same size for Wyvern at 30 x 9.00 – 15 (the same you quoted for Meteor). But i have not seen Meteor wheels fitted with this style of tyre tread.. they usually seem to have a straight groove cut around the circumferance.. where as Wyvern’s are always ‘knobbly’ as shown. But nevertheless you may have seen both?!

Fascinating photos! Whats the large two-row radial engine, lacking cylinders, in the second set of photos?

It looks like a great place for exploring

Yes, this would make a fascinating ‘what aircraft can you see’ thread.
Anyone know what the centre section is to the right of the Herald cockpit?
Looks WWII period.
