Name of civilian Spitfire pilot killed 23.07.42?

Hello to all,

Searching for the name of civilian Spitfire pilot who lost his life on the 23.07.42 whilst flying W3958. Anybody have any ideas to his identity, I know that he was from No.1 C.R.U. (Civilian Repair Unit). Any help greatly appreciated.

Regards

Melvin

Whoops …looks like the Test Flying Memorial site have the wrong a/c ID.
Just cross checked a couple of sites and it looks like it probably was W3958 at Cumnor.

I’d be a little suspicious of Cowley as a take-off point as well, as I don’t know of any aerodrome there – unless anyone knows better? After all, there were a lot of Tiger Moth’s built there.

Hi Bazv,

Many thanks for that link, thought the serial number was dodgy as I also have W3958!

Kind regards

The roof of the factory building top right still survives to this day and visible on GE

Well, well. Consider me educated – I’ve driven across it on the Oxford ring piece – sorry, road – often enough!

Thanks for that, baz!
