Duxford IWM

Advice please. I am visiting there with a youngster later this month and as I have not been for many years am wondering if a single day’s visit (1000 to 1600) can do it justice or if we might have consider a second bite of the cherry.

I am happy to absorb everything there, but the lad’s interests are predominantly pre-war and wartime aircraft as well as militaria of any sort. A visit to Concorde and a glimpse of the SR71 Blackbird are also musts.

I would say you can do it in a day but there is so much to see that it might take longer, your best bet is to go start at airspace and work your way up.

To give you a taste of what there is have a look at this site as it covers more than the IWM site

http://www.duxford-update.info/

And will show you where most things are and what they look like.

No worries just take a camera with a BIG memory card as unlike memories pictures dont fade as quick.

Plus when he see’s the blackbird he will convert from props to jets very quickly (-:

If the lad is really keen and is going to spend time looking at the exhibits, the AirSpace Hall could well keep you busy until lunchtime. Suitably fortified, you can then tackle the long walk past the parked airliners to the US hall at the other end of the site. Any other buildings you manage to visit on the way back will be bonus.

Definitely sounds like two bites of the cherry. I don’t he’ll forgive me if we miss the BoB Hangar, though.

He means the trolley bus that goes up and down the airfield saves you from walking, i prefer to walk both ways as it must be a couple of miles there and back.

Or my grandad used to walk up to the land warfare hall and catch the trolley back.

I took my son there when he was 5 and we’ve been back several times since, its “our place”, I’d say you can do it in a day, just ! land warfare hall is a nice way to close it off with a change of theme.

I often find that the best treats are unexpected, I went up one spring and there appeared to be half the fighter collection making short test flights and undergoing engine runs etc.

Plus you can usually get nice and close to something being restored, and as its a real ex operational airfield, there is a sense of history about the place.

I hope you both enjoy it.

Thanks very much, chaps, for all this info. I know we will have a great day there and only wish it was nearer so that it could become “our place” as well.:)

It’s not a long walk. I’m over 60 and I find it easy enough, I guess a youngster might find it a bit of a trek though. I started taking my two at about 5 also and now the youngest is my regular companion at legends. Unfortunately I only seem to manage the one airshow a year these days unless I manage to make it to Abingdon as well. Really must make the effort to get back to OW this season.

Don’t forget that you can hop on and off the bus wherever you like – it stops at each hangar anyway, and as it is a free service you can just make use of it as you wish. Watch out for the dodgy ex-police driver with the beard tho’….. 😉

Well we had a terrific day! The weather was awful and we walked everywhere and saw everything but must make a return visit because there were many hangars we wanted to spend more time in and many items we wanted to linger over for longer and we arrived at 1000 and left just before 1600.

But all-in-all a great experience and one a 7 year old will never forget, let alone an old’un who hasn’t been for about 20 years. We’ll be back again for a more selective visit later in the year. I’ve lost track of the posts but would appreciate whoever it was linked me to the “unofficial” Duxford website to “re-link” me. Many thanks.
