Old Warden Film 1965 on British Pathe Site

Something to brighten a winter Sunday morning. A nice bit of Pathe colour film from a very early Shuttleworth display in 1965, showing Tutor, Tomtit(in blue colour scheme), 504, Bristol Fighter and static Hurricane and Spitfire.

Its nice to think that apart from the Spitfire all the other aircraft are alive and well still living at the same airfield 45 years further on.

What a wonderful thing to see! Thanks for posting:)

Is that the Sea Hurricane painted up in RAF colours?

Also isn’t that now Peter Teichmans PR.XI Spitfire? If so, she’s still alive, although going through some really maticulous refurb at the moment!

Cheers, Huw

Many thats for that. The air displays where a bit more lively then. It was around the mid 1960’s when i first went to Old Warden for the first time. My father started going there as a young boy before he moved to Dunstable in 1935. He still remebers seeing his first aircraft landing at Old Warden. He is still working on the gliders there!

Thanks for that. The landscape around Old Warden seems to have changed little in the last 45 years and this just shows how lucky we are to have such a gem of a collection in the UK.
The Pathe site also contains plenty of other aircraft clips including some really good Farnborough Air Show footage and a 1947 dispaly at Southend.

Aaah, takes me back. Nice piece of film – wonder if we can view the rest of it?

I first visited OW 1962 or 63 and it became my second home (at least during the summer months) – everyone was so friendly and there was a very relaxed attitude in those days.

That’s Wally swinging the Tutor prop – he succeeded Chief Engineer Malcolm Frasier(?) in the late 60’s when he emigrated to work for MOTAT in New Zealand. I think that’s ‘Jacko’ (Sqdn Ldr Jackson, Manager who had been a friend of ROS before the war) in the cockpit of the F2b.

Bert Etheridge and Phil the caretaker are other names that spring to mind.

Roger Smith.

No – the one in the film is PL983, currently undergoing complete re-build at Duxford. It had been displayed statically at OW for many years.

Ah right, thanks for that:)

Brilliant! I guess they’re a little more cautious now about acrobatics in the Tutor than they were back in 1966!

Lovely nostalgic footage. I started visiting Old Warden in the early 70s when we moved in to the area and have so many fond memories of visits there. My father, who worked at Woodley in the early 30s, enjoyed his “time-warp” experience, each time I took him there.

The Hurricane looks like its in RAf camouflage, I dont remeber it in camouflage until it was used in the Battle of Britain film, but i could be wrong. When i first started to go there it was silver doped.

Those were the days when a chap wore a collar and tie to go aviating. How things have changed.

Quite so. Standards slipping every which way you turn…..mind you there’ll be a few “chaps” who still do wear a collar and tie to go aviating. Goodwood in September is the place to be.
