Afternoon all,
I wonder if anyone might be able to help ID this fairly large perspex light cover which is one of a number held by my local preservation group?
The only obvious identifiers are a couple of stamps, one “DTD 339” (I am assuming the spec of the perspex) and the other “SSG 8”.
It is appx 12.5 inches in width, 11 inches in chord on the longest surface, 4 inches on the shortest and about 10 inches in depth/section.
Both corners on the longer chord surface are chamfered to around 45 degrees, those on the shorter surface are radiused 90 degree corners.
There is (or was on this one, it has since become detached) a rib running down the centreline on the inner surface of the cover down the whole chord.
Any help very gratefully received,
Thanks, Timbo

Possibly also Suntex Safety Glass, who were in business up to about 10-12 yrs ago, and did a LOT of aircraft perspex.

aaahhhh you evil genius you, yes that’s it! And now you’ve said that, there is just such a stamp on the PR9 Nav light cover I knicked..um..re-housed…from 39 Sqn! Nicely done sir! 🙂
So, the mystery remains unsolved..

The cover is quite a distinctive shape so I am sure somebody will identify it.
I got the company name from this useful site,I bookmarked it ages ago but kept forgetting to post on here…

Bell rung Tim,they have obviously made thousands of panels for lots of a/c over the years 😀
we have obviously seen the insp stamp before !!
SSG =
Splintex Safety Glass Ltd ??
they did manufacture nav/landing light panels.
But no help with aircraft type.

Hi Baz
Yeah I was having the same issue with “SSG”…it rings a bell, but goodness knows which one!
Well, if the bell rings, let me know!

Hehe thank you – we’re still under masses of the stuff here in backwood Herefordshire!
It made a handy stand for the mystery lamp cover 😉

Blimey, you’ve set out on quite a quest haven’t you!
Again, great find. My googling skills are obviously in need of some serious tuning 😮

According to this manufacturers codes list … SSG is probably Splintex, although the list is specifically for telingbone stuff,I would imagine the companies would use the same code for all their products…

Nah Bruce…it must be Splintex because apparently the Crews prefer it and the manufacturers demand it 😀

Thanks Bruce! So at least I have some manufacturer possibilities to back with 🙂
It’s a shame there aren’t any other identifiers on the piece then..it is looking like a very small needle in a rather large haystack to me..
