Hi gang,
does anyone have info to hand regarding the times for raising and lowering of the RAF ensign, winter included!

Was certainly raised at 07:30 last time I did it – a real pain at that time of day, right in the middle of the morning rush. Drop the barriers, build up a nice queue of traffic waiting to get in, and take the duty SNCO out of the MGR at the buisiest time !

Huh typical blue jobs, part timing again. For us brown jobs it was 0630 (Reveille in old days) and 1800 (Setting the guard) summer or winter. Always knew the RAF only worked part time:D:D
Ah you forgot to mention that we never went on det anywhere unless it had a 5 star hotel for accomodation.:D:D:D

On a normal working RAF station the Ensign will be raised at 0730 (L), lowered winter 1630 (L) summer 1800 (L) I think thats when the clocks change, but the up and down remains local time. Thats from Queens regs.
Hope that helps.Cheers

Hmmm, that’s interesting; at every RAF unit I have served at, including the current one, the Ensign is raised at 0800 (L) and lowered at 1800 (L) in the Summer and 1600 (L) in the Winter. However, if your copy of Queen’s Regulations says otherwise then perhaps I’d better ask around!

And that included Civvies!! Whether I arrived – at Benson – as a Civvy, or in Uniform, it was “The Done Thing” to stand rigidly to attention between the whistle blasts (Officers at The Salute). Failure to do so would be repaid by some of your Very Urgent Works Services being mysteriously “lost” in the administrative procedures.

One morning I thought I could get past the laundry moving up the stick so I elected to proceed with haste..
I lost the election:o
The SWO sent one of his elves to deliver his compliments 🙁 even us CS aren’t immune.
……and woe betide ANYONE who did not stop and stand at attention who was remotly in earshot of the whisleblasts!!!!

Why do you want to know that? if you live nr aldergrove go and ask them..?
might be afraid of a visit from Special Branch? :diablo:
Anyway, it’s started a thread with some nostalgia coming out.

Thirty odd years ago at the RAF Hartland Point radar station, the time of the morning ensign raising ceremony depended on the time I, as the admin bod, arrived for work – usually between 8 and 9am. After a hard day’s work, I would lower it as I left to go home, normally between 4 and 5pm, and would stow it in my MQ, some 4 or 5 miles away, overnight and at weekends. (it was often very wet and soggy!)
Unfortunately, one morning, following extreme winter gales, I arrived at the Point to find that the top ten feet of the flagpole had snapped off during the night and flown like a javelin to a position some distance away! Needless to say ensign raising duties were suspended for a while!
Happy uncomplicated days’. Regards …… Paul

I cannot remember the times but I did enjoy ‘peeping’ my little whistle, once to start and two to finish! 🙂

Higuys,
many thanks indeed – yes, i do live just down the road from aldergrove, but i don’t think the PABX would appreciate a call about ensign raising and lowering times at this time of night! Besides, most ‘erks’ below the rank of corporal wouldn’t know, unless of course, they were remustered from the now disbanded GD trade!
