Pilot Oxygen Mask With No Hose?

Hi,

I have a video on youtube showing Mark Hanna displaying a Hunter and he is wearing an oxygen mask. Someone has left a comment and I need an answer from you guys. The question is:

“why in Europe do someο»Ώ pilots wear Oxygen masks with no hose hooked up to it? I’ve always wondered this”.

This is the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGl7onm34Gg

Thanks.

Alot of modern boom mikes have very good noise suppression, but back say ten plus years ago when Mark was flying it was often necessary in most warbirds and classic jets to wear a mask to protect the mike from all the noise.

They are worn for comms

I know.

not easy to wear a headset and boom when pulling high G maneouvres!

Ever seen an Extra/Pitts/Sukhoi pilot wear such a mask?

I bet you its bloody horrible though wearing one just for the comms and without a nice flow of oxygen!

I bet it is. See my original post on this subject πŸ˜€

Maybe these masks are just worn to look more “period” (others would say “cool”) than with lowly David-Clark earwarmers… 😎

Bit like lugging a pilot’s suitcase with Jeppesens for all of Europe into the club C172 for a local ride, come to think of it…. :p

Mask – no hose

Oxygen system working or not, you don’t need it a ground level – unless you’ ve got a hangover!

I reckon definitely worn for comms. It also would give some wind blast protection in case of an ejection bailout or birdstrike too.

The mike is in the mask. Not all civil warbirds still have the oxygen system working. it’s one less thing to take care off πŸ˜‰

Thanks for info. I’ll pass it on.

Just a wild guess, but isn’t the microphone in the mask?

Could be but i suspect the commentary was put on afterwards. Although that might be his communication mike of course.
