To potentialy extend it’s range as in Chindit type operations. Again tongue firmly in top of mouth.

To place it in a location where it is possible to operate helos but not fixed wing aviation? That would seem to be the only reason as far as I can make out.

Well Old Eagle has it correct but I do like John’s suggestion.

Its a Skeeter being rigged on a Medium Stressed Platform for airdrop from a Bev. The photos are dated October 61 and were passed to me by one of the chaps you can see on top of the load in these other photos.
It was a trial by the AATDC who dropped the Skeeter just the once and then did the same to an Auster AOP Mk 9. Following the drop both aircraft were re-rigged and test flown.

The MSP must be one of the longest serving bits of kit in the UK forces as it was first dropped in 1953 and is still in service today.

Anyway no one has answered the big question WHY would you want to airdrop a helicopter in the first place?

Perhaps the rotor poked out of the top hatch of the Bev and it gave the Bev a vertical lift capability. (with tongue very firmly in cheek).

It looks like a junior “Loadies” trade test.

Sketter is correct John but why is it in ‘bondage’ and what’s the other aircraft involved?
