Forget Cockpits And Engines. How About A REALLY BIG Project?

One of the Cardington airship sheds is up for sale.

I’d guess the purchase price is about one percent of the likely cost of restoration

I’m sure, on the ‘Band On The Run’ re-issue CD, there is a recording of McCartney and Wings (geddit?) rehearsing said track at Cardington. It always stuck in my mind. But what a great place for a band to rehearse a world tour??

Take away the cost of the land from £137 million, Then build 550 houses, how much does a £250,000 house actually cost to build ? You won’t have 137 million after that little lot is paid for . I still reckon the scaffolding alone would consume the best part of ‘several millions’ It would be a major project to assemble scaffolding on that scale, there would be truck loads of scaffolding parts and it would take weeks to erect it and then hire it for a year or so. Or have I got it wrong ??? Whatever the profit margins for the builders I still say that those who had the buildings listed should at least contribute to the restoration. I have seen the outcome of someones little ‘lets make that a listed building’ plan first hand, it is these people that should be the ones paying.

I deleted the post to which you refer as I realised very quickly it lacked detail and clarity, which you have picked up on. However, all I was trying to say was that there must be a profit still to be made and someone will no doubt do it.

Out of interest and one for the locals – how was the other hangar refurbished and how long did it take?

…shame to knock it down plenty more places for another housing estate.

I think the hangars are clad in asbestos…..so I don’t think anybody will be knocking them down any time soon! :diablo:

Asbestos would also badly affect the costs of refurbishment.

I also understand that only one of the hangars is listed.

Its a Pity that the people who decided that the hangars should be listed don’t come forward and take responsibility for them. To be fair the other one sounds like it is in safe hands so no problem there.
Fair enough if the developers want to go that route, but you got to make a fortune out of the new houses to be able to support that project on top of supporting the builing company profit in the current financial climate.
It is a major project and will without doubt cost far in excess of any budget mentioned in my opinion.
Just imagine the cost of scaffolding alone for a building that size before you get into restoring it with the correct materials.I think that cost alone would be frightening.

The original plan from the developers, back in 2006 ,was to build a housing estate on the adjecent land and use some of the proceeds to fund a £6 million restoration programme.

I guess that now that the recession has struck that they are trying to dispose of the literally, leaky, asset.

According to the article thats still the plan –

“Planning permission has been secured for 550 houses to be built on the land, with the condition the 157ft (48m) tall and 812ft (247m) long hangar would be refurbished.”

The hangar was earlier offered for sale as warehousing, but locals (rightly) overturned planning permission because of the hundreds of lorries that would have to travel past their doors.

Sounds like a nice peaceful airfield would be the ideal solution :diablo:

Quite so. I was doing it from memory. (Thought they were asking £1 million)

Settle for 10%?
