Rover got the Meteor Engine as part of a deal for Rolls-Royce to take over the whittle project jet’s as the air ministry thought Royces would be better equiped to deal with the new aircraft turbine’s as they were already in the aircraft business. and rover were struggling to get the results that were expected from the new jet’s……..

And I eMailed him about the engines but got no reply…………………………

Here`s one that runs.

Strong money though, but not if you counted all the hours spent putting it on the trailer and plumbing it in.

Are you interested pete for spares?

Guess shipping is the next expensive hurdle plus the tax duty.

No, the two with thrown rods are worthless really, the water jacket usually gets caught by the rod, so by the time you have welded it up it aint worth it!
That makes the other two $3000 each and as you rightly stated, the shipping / Import Duty kills it.

The last one I saw sell on eBay over here went for around £800.

He seems to be talking about the power output with turbochargers fitted. He does mention that two of them came from Tanks, I think he is just pushing the descriptive envelope more than anything. Two of them have been modified to operate wet-sump in boats or tractor pullers.
Loads of people refer to these as Merlins or “Merlin Meteors”, but they are Rover Meteors. Rolls-Royce designed it and produced it until 1942 or 43 I think. Anyway, most were built by Rover, or Nuffield as a sub-contractor to Rover. Rovers made many improvements, most noteworthy of which was the roller cam follower to replace the somewhat pathetic chrome plated effort by Rolls-Royce which even plagued the Griffon on the Shackleton until it was phased out in 1992.
The Meteor was a successful powerplant which Rover could be proud of.

If he thought they were Merlins he would probably not have started the bidding at $6000?

Mondariz, you can use a certain amount out of these engines for flight use, and more if you are building a ground-runner. In reality the only major Meteor parts I have seen flight engines are the liners and possibly the rings.

Nice he delivers to a shipping port within 100 miles…although there are few shipping ports within 100 miles of Cross Lanes, WV 🙂

How much can be used rebuilding actual Merlins?

Someone is going to be disapointed, when those 1200-1650hp engines produce only around 600hp.

Well he may get some grief if they sell and “not as described” and a complaint comes his way!
