Don’t know the early history of the No.1 Mk.2 carrier (11A/4376) but definitely used for carrying photoflashes in Canberra in late 1950s. (see AP.1664A)

Normally fitted with ten fuzing units: five tail (No.3 Mk.1 5D/1823) and five nose (No.2 Mk.1 5D/1478). Carried either five stores (two tiers) or three (single tier).

Length 2ft 8in, Width 2ft 3in, height 1 ft, weighs in at 75-lbs.
A photo would confirm.

Those recoil reels were used on all sorts – Vampire, Venom, Hunter, Canberra and so on.

Carrier Multistore No.1 Mk.2 was used on Canberra for carriage of 8-inch photoflash

YA

Thanks Wow so its used on the Cambera, couple of questions that trouble me about that, it has 6 recoil reels exactly the same design as the Lancaster bomb bay for pulling the pins out of the bombs once clear of the aircraft, did flashes use these? Second is its got a Kings crown which as far as i know was replaced by the broad arrow at the end of 1944 for aircraft parts.

This is a case of an object telling you exactly what it is.

Carrier, Multi Store (ok it doesn’t tell you that bit) No.1 Mk.2

Stores Ref. 11A/4376

Made by Edward Webster Ltd. Bournemouth and with a mod plate telling you what’s been done to it.

All you need to find out now is what types used it. The info comes from AP1086 amended to 1966.

The plate on the right is a standard data plate, with the modifications carried out on the unit. Ive seen these on BAC1-11, HS748 components – normally airframe ie Radomes, Ailerons, Rudder etc(got some un-stamped ones somehere).

I would assume that these where across the board on UK manufactured aircraft from the mid to late 1950’s. This one is obviously for something military given the section ref code (11B)and they are connected given the serial number tye up between the two plates. No idea what EWB means – someone here will be clever enough, but a lot of the 1-11 u/c serial numbers begin with VW/EEGW and then the individual serial number. I have assumed that this means VICKERS WEYBRIDGE/????

Maybe someone can enlighten us on that

The 11A number is the only one you need. That will identify what it is, but not necessarily what it was fitted to.

This is not an airframe part per se; it is an accessory!

Bruce

Thanks Bruce

It’s interesting you say it’s an accessory, so it’s a bolt on bolt off piece? This would suggest it’s more of a Fighter bomber piece or are all Bomb racks considered an accessory? Even when fitted to Lancaster for example. I bought this as being from a Mosquito from a usually reliable source but the People at Evington looked at it and said definitely not. Will get a picture over tomorrow, it’s in the back of the truck at present and weighs a ton need some help to lift it out. 😮

The airframe code for the Hornet is 26EW, not AWB..

This 26EW code would not appear on the parts in any case, even if it were type specific. Only occasionally would 26EW appear on a stores tag. All Hornet airframe parts take the form:

3F123 for example.

3=type 103
F=fuselage
123=part number

Hope this helps.

Thanks the code on the plate is EWB made a typo, will have a good look over it tomorrow to see if I can find any more numbers.

Hi Graham,

The second plate does have a de Havilland style to it.

What makes you think it is specifically for a Hornet?

What piece of equipment is it fitted to?

Hello David

It is on a bomb rack and apparently the Hornet was caplable of carrying a small bomb load ? the code on it being AWB I thought might have been the Hornet airframe code ie AW for Hornet and B for Broughton. Having had some further advise from another De Haviland expert it seems its not the case so back to square 1.
I found this part number see pic which does not help.
