Hi,
We are looking for some long SP86 countersunk steel rivets for the Comet undercarriage shock struts in 3/16″ and 1/4″ diameter. My usual supplier, LAS, doesnt stock them long enough. Can anyone help with the contact for another supplier. A Google search doesnt come up with anything.
One thought is does anyone have any old ex MOD stock perhaps.

Steel rivets
Ken,
I’ve got about 150-200 – 3/16ins x 1.1/2ins long csk rivets.
I can send a couple down to you for you to check if they’ll do, if you are interested. If so, PM me with your address.

You can countersink taper pins….
DH didnt use them much, if at all – I have only ever seen rivets in all the places Supermarine would have used taper pins!
Just an idea – and I will look for rivets for you today – I bought much of LAS remaining stock of longer steel rivets for an FW190 some years ago!

Hi Bruce
We cant use steel taper pins as they have to set with a countersunk head at both ends and then machined perfectly smooth to match the profile of the tubes they are going through, both internaly as well as externaly.

AGS etc
Niall,
There is more likelihood of you finding the correct part than I – assuming you can access the database. I’m not sure if my rivets, whilst being old stock, may be metric. I can’t check until Sunday anyway.
This, or these, museums in (and I assume you mean) jeopardy. Do you have anywhere in particular in mind:diablo:

BAE stock.
Ken,
We have quite literally millions of ex BAE rivets that we are in the process of unpacking here at Millom. If you dont turn any up from anywhere else we will have a look for you. We could really do with having a bit of a handover with the BAe Heritage lads first as there is a proper stores computer with everything catalogued. In the event of us not having time to look ourselves, you would be welcome to browse yourself.

I’ll have a look – I bought a lot of steel rivets from LAS a few years ago.
Have you thought about steel taper pins?

Rivets
No promises but I’ll look through what I have and get back to you.
I definitely have steel stuff, it’s the exact sizes I’m not sure about.

3/16″ Rivets
SP86-619…1 3/16″ long 40off
SP86-622…1 3/8″ long 40off
SP86-617…1 1/16″ long 40 off
1/4″ Rivets

I have rounded up the numbers required in case any are put in wrong and have to be taken out again
They are for the airworthy rebuild of DH88 Comet Black magic, its ok about any paperwork as they can be tested before use and signed off
Hope you can help, they can all be longer to be cut to size depending on what we can get
