Well I went up with my father today to have a peer at WR963 and generally get my hands dirty with a spanner 😉 Really great bunch of chaps up there working on the old girl, though they are in need of some new (and dare i say, a little younger :diablo: ) group of vounteers to help them get her looking and feeling a bit better 🙂
Firstly, you wouldnt believe the wind up at Baginton today, enough wind to have 963′ sliding up and down on her oleo’s a bit 😮
Helped out finish off changing the inner port engine with a fresh one which was a good laugh, then on our way to the loo’s (Just happen to have to go through the back of the classic flight hangar :diablo: ) i snapped a few pics of the delicious treasures within 🙂

Wyvernfan,
I don’t think so at this stage, the important thing is that the plans for preservation are still in place.
On your favourite subject; do the photos from the 50s still exist of the 5 Wyverns stuck nose in the ground after landing at Ford (still with Carrier pressure in their tyres), all in perfect line abreast. Also the classic of one stuck in Eagle’s funnel during the Med cruise in 1955?

I’ve seen the use of a Shack Griffon for this purpose before on Discovery or National Geographic. If I recall it was testing the glass on the Al-Burj skyscraper, the highest in Dubai if I am not mistaken…
I also saw this excellent program, you are not mistaken:)
I hope the building gets finished what with all the financing problems slowing the project now

It aint a pretty sight to be honest :$ (and i know i have a big dust point on my Sensor ;))
I hope that you (despite the condition) like the picture.

Mo, are there any plans to keep her live and running on the ground.?
By: Mo Botwood - 9th December 2009 at 05:05
WL790
Nashio.
I have received assurance from Pima that:
…. [I][FONT=”Arial”]“nothing has happened to WL790. The plan is on track to paint the Shack next summer when the new restoration hangar is finished. The only thing taken out of 790 other than draining the gas is the batteries.”

from what my father has told me, the engine that was removed has gone to dubai (not sure what for) The money that was gained from selling off the engine will go to getting the old girl looking and feeling a good bit better 🙂
since the engine being fitted is a 0 hour one its better for the old girl in the long run 🙂
Edit: (from dad)

WJ874 is indoors, bloomin’ great news! 😀
As for WK163, a team has been assembled to assess her current condition and act upon those findings accordingly, with a view to bringing her back to an airworthy state. (I believe WJ874 is included in this arrangement too)
I am merely the messenger on this and am passing on what little I have heard from contacts on the inside forming part of this team – don’t quote me on any of the above!
It’s all gotta be steps in the right direction though.
Great work on the Shack though, how many of us young’uns (ish!) can say “I changed a dirty great Griffon on a Shackleton today”? 🙂
Fantastic news 🙂
They both look in bloody good nick to be honest!!!

Since the buyers wanted to see the engine working before they bought it, they bought one of the ones that was already “hooked up”
since the engine being fitted is a 0 hour one its better for the old girl in the long run 🙂
Edit: (from dad)
The engine was sold to a glass construction company who make structural glass for the tall buildings being built in Dubai. They have to test each glass sheet for wind pressure as the glass is part of the building structure

Why the engine change?

well cov is still a half hour drive for me, but as far as i can see a good portion of the chaps travel for several hours just to do some work on the old girl 🙂
finally getting all of the engine bearer bolts onwas just brilliant, to be honest 🙂
I shall definitely be going back down there to lend my hand to them again, best fun ive had in absolutely ages 😀
