1970s Spitfire Crash at Duxford – Help!

Hi all,

I’m very new to this forum and wondered if any of you guys can help me out? As a boy i witnessed a Spitfire crashing at an Airshow at Duxford during a display with a Hurricane. From what i remember both aircraft looped and the Spitfire hit the ground as it was too low. The date would have been in the late 70’s i think?? Not a lot to go on i know, but have always wondered what Spitfire it was.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

You might have seen AB910 BBMF’s MkV tipping up on its nose on landing in June 1976. I can’t think of what else you might of seen as i was there at the time.

Yes, i think that will be it. I have a prop tip given to me on the day by a Duxford Fireman.

Thanks for clearing that one up.

Are you thinking of the Rolls Royce owned Mk XIV RM689? (Much later than 1970’s though, more like early 90’s)

That sad event happened at Woodford in 1992
