Grumman Wildcat

I got to wondering about the designations of the Grumman Wildcat variants versus the GM built models.

Why was the F4F designation changed to FM as opposed to something like F4M?

I mean, the TBF Avenger was simply changed to TBM when GM built them.

Why did the Wildcat lose the 4 in its designation?
