Thanks for that Anon, will try looking for any Sunderland wrecks.

Hi nimgen,

Think a lot of the Sunderland crashes in the area were over land. L5802 did however sink when control was lost during landing in the Cromarty Firth on 16th January, 1943. Don’t know exact position but given its proximity to the Moray Firth it might be a possibility that tides and currents have dragged wreckage there.

Are you trying to upload on an iPad? I’ve had problems with trying to do that.

It has been cleaned it up quite a bit…

Nice that it didn’t end up being scrapped. Can you post a photograph?

With what is visible, the spinner, which just covered the pitch cylinder and counterweights, were usually used on the Wellington and Sunderland. I don’t recall seeing a picture of them on Blenheims (Mercury) but that doesn’t mean they weren’t. Pegasus-engined Swordfish used a different prop. A six-foot blade sounds too long for Mercury-engined aircraft anyway.

The gear ratio is the difference between the front and rear gear rings. The number of teeth is not relevant but if the front and rear rings are the same diameter then the prop is 0.5 to 1 gear ratio which, again, points to Pegasus. The more-slender front of the gear case remains looks more like a Peggie/Mercury case.

The Taurus engine had a beefier, much more rounded, reduction gear much like the Hercules. I have a Taurus reduction gear and bracket prop which came out of the Moray Firth, I’ll try and dig out a picture for comparison anyway.

FB stands for Fedden Butler – the standard prefix for Bristol engines’ components.

My money’s on Pegasus from a Sunderland.

Anon.

Have resurrected this old thread in the hope of clarifying info. This prop is now held by Morayvia. It has been cleaned it up quite a bit and the ident number FB73288 ? has been found on the small reduction gear brass nut attachment, there is also an inspectors stamp ?, a small circle with BA 703 ? in it. The two remaining prop blades are 6 ft long and there is a spinner attachment ring over the counterweights. The small reduction gear bevels appear to have 25/26 teeth and the large ones 36 ? From the info already on this site I assume it to be a DH Hamilton Standard counterweight prop as fitted to a Pegasus engine probably, fitted to a Wellington Mk1 or Sunderland.
It would be much appreciated if anyone could add anything further about the prop, in light of the markings provided above. Also if anyone has any more info on where it was dredged could they pass on the details to me in order to possibly compile a write up about the prop.

Many thanks.
