We’ve recently had a box of Dunlop brake pads come in, Dunlop part number AHO28290. Anyone have any ideas? I’m thinking Shackleton.

Somewhere we do! I find the list rather intimidating! 😀

I was just about to post again suggesting to get in touch with you Ben! Would you have all the part numbers catalogued etc?

Chippie, let me send some emails to our parts blokes and find out if they are actually shack. Would they possibly be available for purchase?

This shows the hub assembly with all the shoes in place (18 of them!), the inflatable airbag (like a wide innertube) sits underneath the shoes, you can see the high pressure air inlet for this at the bottom of the hub. It also shows the springs that keep the shoes in the retracted position.

To the original question, though I have worked on a Shack I’ve never seen the brake assebly, and I’m only assuming that it is a shoe and drum system from its external appearence, with the cooling fins attached to the drum.

They are definitely brake shoes rather than pads, and the whole circumference of the inner drum is completely covered by them. The over hanging of the friction material probably dosen’t matter as the most effort and wear is usually in the middle area of the shoe.

I too find that photo of interest.
I recently asked the forum for help to understand how this type of brake worked having identified the remains of similar shoes from a Hamilcar dig, and recieved the usual excellent service.
Seeing how the friction material overhangs the metal shoe was a suprise which I wouldn’t have expected looking at the ones I had.

Are they like this one?

Accidently, you have just identified a mystery bracket I have had for a number of years from a Wellington. It’s the bracket off the back of the brake pads and very similar to this one indeed, however mine has a hole in the back and is not the same as yours. Must be a common design for a range of sizes I would hazard a guess?

Brakes
Brake pad as per the old Dunlop way of doing things, a series of shoes around the outer circumference of the pneumatic brake bag which when activated are pushed against the brake drum.

Brake pads as in disc brakes or brake shoes as in drum brakes?

Maybe Meggitt could help?:)
