Today is the 80th anniversary of Waghorn winning the 1929 Schneider Trophy contest in the Supermarine Rolls-Royce S6 . This was, arguably, a pivotal moment when Britain took a significant step ahead of most nations in the development of high power to weight aircraft engines, compact all metal airframes to carry them, and all the associated technologies leading, in the following years to….well you know the rest.
Waghorn, regretably, died the follwoing year while test flying at Farnborough. A sad loss
