Lancaster ED394 VN R

In the Whitley thread there was a question about the Lancaster that crashed in Brampton.

There used to be a website about the last flight – managed by a local enthusiast – but it has not been supported for a few years and has lapsed.

My recollection from the website was that the test flight from a Lincolnshire base attempted to land at Carlisle due to fog in Lincs. The landing was aborted but had insufficient power to circle round again and belly landed and skidded for several hundred yards before crashing and exploding into the Barn behind Kirkby Moor house. The survivors were those thrown clear during the skid.

All major aircraft parts were removed and the owners of the house compensated as they lost several pet dogs, car and wedding presents stored in the barn – all lost in the explosion and conflagration.

The site where the aircraft fist struck is now a caravan park – across a lane (shown in the photos) and then into the barn. The House was a hotel but is now a “Special School” for naughty children (who recently stole a 4X4 and crashed it into a building in the town etc… )

Searching deeper on the web at that time I found a metal detector web site – where he had been over the site and found a few fragments and some 303’s.

So no major fragments left and no access to the site beyond the lane due to the sensitive nature of the school. If the little Bu@@ers thought they could find live 303 shells they could start arming themselves.

If you do go to the site – dont go on a school day -as the other side of a road is the local comprehensive which has a serious parking problem that overspills into the lane.
