XX154 flew a successful air test today after a 10 month lay off from flying,it is now 35 years since her first flight at Dunsfold,Surrey (pilot Duncan Simpson).
She is still working for a living as part of the Empire Test Pilots School fleet at Boscombe Down, she still has her original wing and fuselage and every servicing we try to make her just a little more like a standard Hawk 😀
Does anybody on here have any interesting photos of 154 ?
I do have a few but cannot post until the weekend.
regards BV

Baz, has there been ANY serious chat in your area of work about preservation? (I include pilots, managers as well as engineers) I wonder if any of the ‘wheels’ interested in the subject have suggested it? Great cake and well done for keeping this important thread alive!

Some 154 shots – I do not know who took these as I rescued them from a hangar move !
Probably at Lossie – as ETPS used to go there in the spring for a couple of weeks

Glad you enjoyed the pint SYD…
You know I did not get a piece of that cake LOL…I got that one esp for the pic…but I am sure the ‘vultures’ will have demolished it : )
I did get a piece of the other cake though – so I am not fading away 😀

For the Hawk ‘spurts’ the box under the cake did have 26PL ********* on it but I could not get it in shot : )

Yes 154 did a PD (practice diversion) to Dunsfold and did a few circuits to celebrate her special day – quite a milestone : ).
She also went up to Valley and did a couple of circuits there too (they had a special event today) – Valley were hoping for 154 on static today but for a couple of reasons that was not possible so 154 did a 1hr30min sortie and returned to BD !

XX154 isn’t Valley-based. It is based at Boscombe with the ETPS, and flew over Dunsfold earlier today I believe, in recognition of the anniversary.

my partner’s cousin is flying the hawk down to Dunsfold from RAF Valley tomorrow for static display over the weekend. Wouldn’t it be great if it was XX154? I am meeting him there on Saturday, so if it is I’ll try to get some sly shots. He is due around 2pm and will be doing a few circuits before a fast pass. I’ll see if I can find out if it is XX154…

Hi Folks,
And a BIG Happy Birthday to XX154 40 years young today…
Sadly, I should have been at Dunsfold today with glass in hand but work got in the way.. (I was there to see her first flight in 1974!!)
Geez, I feel old.. Will be raising a glass this evening around 7pm and then go back home in my bathchair!!
Cheers

Yes she has 3 plate brakes.
But still has original wing and fuselage c/w original type tailplane (tailplanes have been swopped around over the years !so would not like to guess on that).
One little interesting detail is that if one looks carefully at the wing L/E there are quite a few slight marks/indents from trialling wing fence/mini fence positions going back to when she was doing aerodynamic development work.
Looking at the photo on post number 4 – you can clearly see the clean wing and extremely inboard wing fence ; )

PM sent 66 bars 😀
That’s a number any self respecting Hawk liney will remember! 😀
I still have the RAT acc access panel off ‘180, liberated from the fire dump after it crashed at Mona.
Did 154 ever get 3 plate brakes? I remember it always had to be different, and kept it’s 2 plate brakes long after everyone else had changed.

How much life does 154 have left on it ?
Given that some of the original Red Arrows airframes are apparently now in storage or wfu at Shawbury.
A quick count reveals there are over 50 airframes in store. Granted I suspect a small number of them have had issues (bird strikes etc)
Are there any plans for 154 after retirement (whenever that is)
