Any ideas what this is? Directional gyro??

Evening all,

Does anyone have any idea what this instrument is or what it came out of? I am guessing it is some kind of compass indicator of some description.

It has no markings at all and is in a similar case to the 580 gallon fuel gauges.

Any help would be gratefully received.
