Yes really nice videos Jason.
I was also interested in the ‘technical side’ of shooting as you controlled both the cameras zoom and the panning superbly. I appreciate how tough it is to follow fast moving planes as tightly as you are managing to do it!
Are you on a pro tripod with a good fluid head? I can see that the XL2 zoom hunts for focus occasionally…interesting to see it do that when a plane passes over a bit of ‘foreground’ like the tail of another plane. However it copes really well overall and the image stabilization on that camera obviously sorts out some things, even if ‘sideways panning’ is really hard for any IS lens to tackle.
I’m currently trying to shoot video with manual lenses of 300 and 600mm (on a Canon 5D2) and get just too much ‘jiggling’ for many shots to be really acceptable, so that’s why I found you videos very revealing….oh and the planes were simply stunning as well of course!. Thanks again for posting here.

Planes of Fame are supposed to own (and I presume display) a Le Vier Cosmic Wind “Miss Cosmic Wind”. I believe this is a rebuild of Cosmic Wind “Minnow” with a shoulder wing but have never been able to confirm this or find any pictures. Did anyone who went to Chino see and better still photograph their Cosmic Wind and if so would it be possible to either post the pictures or arrange to email me copies. I want them purely for myself as the Cosmic Wind and the history of the airframes has been a special interest fo me for over 35 years but there are still some gaps in the history, particularly of “Minnow”, Miss Cosmic Wind and Robin Voice’s Filly (which I believe may contain at least some original parts from “Minnow” which I have never been able to fill.
Sorry if this is a bit off thread but as the thread is about Planes of Fame it seemed a reasonable place to ask.
I have already tried emailing them for a potted history and maybe a photo but got no reply.

Jason, Thanks for the information. I didn’t know of that camera so I just looked it up and found a brief video demonstation. Cripes! That’s a serious piece of equipment and well done you, adding the fluffy mic cover. So many aircraft videos are quite interesting visually but when the wind noise becomes apparent, that’s the time I loose interest and go to find something else to do.

Jason, it seemed from your videos that it was and I did – very much, thank you! You have done a great job recording – there is just no comparison with many of the airshow recordings I find on YouTube. You seemed to have a really good location to see the stars of the show manoeuvring both on the ground and in the air and your sound recording was superb. I am so pleased to have watched it. I (and others, I’m sure) would be keen to learn what sort of equipment you used. Oh, nearly forgot – I really enjoyed all of the displays! Thanks to the owners and crews if they are reading. Again, thank you for sharing.
Best regards, Aerial
Hi Aerial, I’m glad you liked the videos.
I’m using a Canon XL2 with the stock lens and the standard mic. The only upgrades I’ve done was to put on a nice fluffy mic cover to block out the majority of the wind noise, I also have a mount on the back of the camera that holds two big batteries so that I can be out on the ramp all day and not have to worry about charging.
This year was great for filming because I’m crewing for Will Whiteside on his Yak-3UR2000, when I wasn’t strapping him in and getting him taxing for his flight; I got to hang out next to the planes on the hot ramp.

😀 Lovely filming and no irritating commentary,oh you can hear the planes, 🙂
Thank you:)
Thanks Trumper,
I was able to hang out on the hot ramp next to the planes which helped keep all the background chattering to a minimum.
