Name that part?

Here’s an old photo of a part that was fitted to a British aircraft type in the late 30’s and into the early 40’s. Thereafter it was not used on the particular type.

  • So what is it?
  • what a/c type was it fitted to?
  • why was its use discontinued?
  • what are the chances that we might see an example flying again?

Hi Bruce

I don’t know the whereabouts of the original stock items, but the unit shown is an original from which several copies will be made. A couple of MK I restorations are intended to be the recipient a/c.

Ian. It isn’t mine unfortunately. Perhaps one of the resident experts on here might be prepared to post a photo of the control gear.

You’ve got me there merlin. I’ve not seen a picture of the controls for the landing lamp in any preserved Spit. It is shown in the MkIIa/b pilots notes and a very lovely example was recovered from P7533 which came down in Birkenhead park, hence my interest. That must be quite a rare piece you have there.

There were half a dozen New old stock ones floating around about 5 years ago. No idea where they ended up.

I guess HFL will be fitting them to P9373

Well that didn’t take long.

Nice one Ian it is a landing lamp for a Mk I Spitfire.

Spitfire landing lamp? Once youve got it fitted you’ll need another flap lever to operate it. That would just be greedy.
