I find it very important that warbirds have accurate camouflage schemes.
There was a period in the US when many were painted up in horrible colours, ie wrong shade, wrong shapes & overly glossy.
I always thought that those gastly schemes hurt my eyes & attempted to affect my almost sane warbird enthusiast mind.
But many warbirds have or had beautiful civilian colour schemes applied.
Here are a couple to start the ball rolling, what do you all have.

Having looked at this thread, is the Mustang the only ‘warbird’ to have had a civilian colour scheme ? I think not ! Rolls Royce Spitfires come to mind, there must be lots of others too, one very colourfull ‘warbird’ (I rather hope the Hunter can be classed as a warbird) came to mind …. see below !

Seeing the Cavalier factory scheme in post 8 reminds me how attractive they were.
At the risk of being seen as difficult, if I had a Mustang I’d think about a civil scheme…just to be different from all the warbirds out there.
IMHO, It seems like many are painted in the colours of 3-4 units (Blue noses or Yeager’s outfit..and it seems most have invasion stripes, which in reality weren’t on aircraft for very long) and it gets boring.
Or perhaps one with post-war arctic red paint…on a polished USAF or RCAF scheme.
It does make a nice change. To some the thought of a row of red nosed or blue nosed 51s is pure heaven. To me it is kinda boring. I look forward to the return of the French AF markings on 44-63788 when restored. Civilian schemes are for the moment not an option it seems. Too much 8th AF I’m afraid. As far as the 8th goes, one refreshing scheme is on Maurice Hammond’s “Marinell”. You don’t see that many 339th FG a/c. Now what is needed is a 20th FG as well as a 355th FG a/c. Gordon Graham’s “Down for Double” would be a good candidate for the latter.
Anyway, for those who enjoy civilian painted 51s. We just have to sit back an look at photos of cool color schemes from earlier days.

On a more sombre note, all of the above a/c were lost in fatal accidents… 🙁

I agree there is certainly scope for representing some units that have not been previously – I have a 364th FG scheme in mind and I don’t think any post-war Mustang has been painted in the colours of that unit.

No they were not that pink! they were white with a drop of red thrown in not a bucket!
I know that, that’s why I said “based on”… 😉

Ahem, that was based on authentic warbird colours – No.16 Squadron operating Fr.IXs in France post-D-Day…. 😉

Warbirds in Civilian Colours
Gentlemen,
Thanks to all for replying, with comments and photos.
I was not aware of Benyboys Thread about the same subject started on 3 Dec 08.
Reminds me a bit of “Ships passing in the fog.”
Mr Moderator Sir, would you please attach this thread onto the one started by Benyboy.
Merci, Danke & Thanks

It gets a bit boring when there either all polished metal or standard colours.

I still reckon the Red Bull Sea Vixen was the best paintjob i’ve ever seen.
Although as for the accurate paint markings debate, I don’t care – it’s the owners property, therefore he/she can do what he likes with it

and what colour do you paint the warbird you own?

In fairness, if we too often just refer newer members to the archives, then the forum moves closer towards stagnation.
BB is right though, the previous thread is a very rich seam 🙂
