Have just returned from a trip to the Aviation Bookshop in Tunbridge Wells and they have a very similar photo (slightly different angle) in their photo basket.

Peter

Probably this image originated with the same source! I rather suspect the residual archive of the late Bruce Robertson.

I have found my original thread. Put Mystery Liberator nose 1960s in the thread Search box for more info on this relic. I’d put in a link if my pc would let me!

Mine does!:)

It was the same photo in Epics of AA and I wrote that particular chapter at Bruce’s request.

Cockpit Fest, Andy? Maybe, but it wasn’t at Legends …:diablo:

A similar photo appears on Page 73 in “Epics of Aviation Archaeology” by Bruce Robertson. (ISBN 0 85059 305 0).
The book itself is now long out of print, but it may be possible to find a s/h copy.

For the benefit of those who do not have access to a copy of this book, the passage describing the nose section reads as follows:

The nose of an RAF Liberator lay on a market garden at Ingham, Lincolnshire up until about 1965 and then mysteriously vanished.
Mr J D Oughton, the RAF Liberator specialist, believes that it may have been from AM910 which was scrapped at Tollerton, Nottinghamshire in April 1942, after being used at Boscombe Down for the trial installation of 4x 20mm cannon and ASV radar.

I watched the making of the Ridley Scott movie Alien this evening. He mentioned that when they built the set for the Nostromo they used a lot of old aircraft parts – apparently they went to a scrapyard (this would have been around 1978 I expect) and found some canberras (not surprising) but then he went on to mention Wellingtons and Spitfires! Wonder if any wartime parts ended up in that film…

Scrapped, I suspect.

In the early 60’s people were still scrapping Spits and Lancaster, and wrecking Mosquitos in movies as late as 1964 😡

Blimey Dave!

Not sure how your set of photos ended up down here, then!

What happened to it? Was it saved?

I took the photo in Aug 1960! Yes, there was a thread but I haven’t got time to look for it right now. It was on the edge of the former RAF Ingham airfield near Scampton. I don’t think its identity was ever proven, but it was certainly narrowed down.

Hi

AM910 120Sq crashed nutt’s corner, nose was somewhere in linconshire until at least the late 60’s/early 70’s.
but it was the first Lib with the 20mm cannon pack.
I am sure someone recovered it.
cheers

I suspect more like the 1960’s, but I could be wrong?

I know nothing more. The photo just chanced my way today and I was curious about the story….where, when, what, where is it now etc etc.

Hi All,
AM120? ( may have to check this ? )
I remember it was the first 20mm cannon armed RAF liberator thought it was recovered in the late 70’s early 80’s, first saw the photo in the baac magazine.
Think it was up near M4 somewhere.
cheers
