Still no flying Mossie or P-38 at Duxford ?

Sad to see both of the types not operational in the UK or Eruope as far as I know or have seen. Any restoration plans to bring one to flying status ?

Thanks

Odd how the topic is now Sea Furies as opposed to DH.98s or P-38s :p

Yes I remember this routine too, Not sure on the year think 1995 and my mind kept thinking it was Ray not Mark.

95 sounds about right……always in my mind it was Mark….it is nearly 15 years ago :(…..but more than happy to be corrected and know it was Ray.

It was bloomin magical though 🙂

Anybody know if or when we last had a American engined Fury/Sea fury display in the UK?.

Last weekend was the first time.

Probably not since Mark Hanna’s display’s in the OFMC ex-Iraqi Fury back in the mid 90’s…?
Still vividly recall a Legends where Mark in the Fury and Stephen Grey in the Bearcat did a scintilating high speed tight pairs tail chase sequence back in the mid 90’s…. 😎

Just splitting hairs but i always thought it was Ray and not Mark in the Fury… light heartedly boasting that anything the Bearcat could do the Fury could do just as well.!

It was also nice to see Stephen Grey putting the Sea Fury through its paces, It has been a long time since I last saw such a high powered Sea Fury display the sound and sight was a pleasure.

I cannot see many if any American powered Furies/Sea Furies coming to the U.K for the British register as the CAA will view it as a major modification and want all the documentation and stress analysis .

I have done airshows for many years but feel fairly certain that until this years Legends I had not seen one fly. But I am just curious.

It was great to compare the sound, And the look, One the ground the 4 blade propeller on wright R3350 looks a little odd, Maybe because I am used to a 5 blade propeller on a Fury I don’t know. For sure in the air the Centaurus sounds nicer and smoother.

I assume you can aurally tell the difference

I would say in the air the Centaurus is very smooth sounding in comparison, on the ground its a different mater and sounds like a 1930’s Russian lawnmower 😀

Only one of the pair was Centaurus powered.

Oh well, you can’t have everything.

But then, by that time I was helmeted and ear plugged up and had fired up the Harley to leave, so wasn’t in that much of a position the hear it to realise it had a 3350 fitted……I assume you can aurally tell the difference

Was nice to see a pair of Centurous powered Furies cavorting about the sky again….:)

I think you will find that only WG655 (the two seater) was Centaurous powered.
It was the first time I had seen a re-engined Sea Fury fly & I much prefer the engine sound of the original, it has more of a ‘whistle’ note to it whilst the Wright engined version sounded a bit more “chuggy” to my ears, but I agree it was good to see two in the air together. Hopefully we will see a resurgence in the type in europe now that there are a few either currently on the circuit or shortly will be. (CAA permitting of course :dev2:)

This one, the other was P&W powered

I thought the other one had the Wright R3350.

Well, the ‘190 was ok but the group of people I was with, were far more impressed with the flying abilities of the Sea Furies, Mustangs and that little blue/grey Yak.

Have to say the 3 x Yak-3M’s were nice to see, shame there’s not one or two flying in the UK really.
