Flypast Aerodrome Heritage Award – Just a Suggestion!

Despite the continued decline in our aerodrome heritage there are a few good people out there who don’t share the same mindset of your average boo-hiss developer. But these individuals have so far gone unacknowledged or unrewarded for their efforts.

I think it would be an excellent idea if Flypast offered an annual prize to those who do more than most to preserve our aerodrome heritage – namely those who restore rather than demolish an important building. I understand that prizes are already given to those who undertake the restoration of aircraft, either complete or cockpit section.

This need not be an extravagant prize, but something to show the appreciation of others towards those who have taken the time and expense to preserve a control tower or other aerodrome structure; not necessarily as a museum or heritage centre, but maybe as a dwelling or business premises.

This award would aim at developers and owners of buildings, and not those nut cases who go on and on and on about the plight of some forgotten airfield in East Yorkshire. Me also thinks that the award should be named after a leading figure of aerodrome architecture from the 1930s. Any suggestions?

What do you think?
