Fred Perry in USAAF?

This article on the Beeb website:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/8126053.stm

suggests that Fred Perry, by then a US citizen, was called up in 1942 and served in the “US air force”.

I’d never heard that before. Does anyone know any more?
